Sagging mattresses are the worst. If you’ve owned a mattress for longer than a few years, you’ve likely experienced this yourself — the dips, the trenches, the once springy foam layers laying dormant in your bed. But while some sagging may be inevitable, there are ways to prevent it from going overboard. How, you ask? Well, allow us to explain.

In this guide, we’re going to introduce you to some of the best mattresses that won’t sag. As you’ll notice throughout this review, all of these beds feature strong support layers that maximize the durability and stability of their structures. So, not only are these cuddly beauties sturdy, and not only are they comfortable, but they’re specifically built to stand the test of time.

Ready to see our picks? Then keep on reading below! And don’t forget to check out our methodology section at the end of this guide for a crash course on all the factors to consider when shopping for a no-sag mattress of your own.

Expert Opinion

As the luxury version of the Helix Midnight, the Helix Midnight Luxe adds zoned support and a cushy pillow-top to the top layer of memory foam. When lying down on it, side sleepers should experience a good deal of pressure relief while still getting support from a layer of individually wrapped coils. The coils also help prevent the bed from sagging. It’s worth noting that the Luxe also has more cooling features than the standard version of the mattress.

In order to ensure that we’re recommending the Helix Midnight Luxe for the correct sleeping positions, we put it through our pressure map test. During testing, we spread the pressure map across a mattress’s surface and lie down on it in the back and side sleeping positions. The map shows areas of high, moderate, and low pressure in a graphic. Areas with high pressure buildup light up with the colors red and orange. Moderate pressure is indicated with the color yellow, and lower pressure shows green and blue.

We saw almost all blue while resting on our back, so back sleepers should find lots of relief on the Midnight Luxe. Side sleeping, we saw a touch of yellow at the shoulder and a bit more at the hip, indicating moderate pressure. To an extent, this is to be expected, as the hip and shoulder are areas that the side sleeper puts the most pressure on. However, the rest of the map showed low pressure, proving that this mattress should create a comfortable sleeping experience for most side sleepers out there.

What our tester says: “The Midnight Luxe is the brand’s luxury take on a medium-firm memory foam hybrid. I think its thick memory foam comfort layer offers plenty of pressure-relief and body contouring, while its zoned coil layer ensures you’re getting plenty of lumbar support.” – Bridget Chapman, senior product editor

What Customers Say

Customers seem to be really happy with the level of comfort and pressure relief that the added pillow top layer provides.

Pros of the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • With low motion transfer, couples are unlikely to be disturbed by partners who toss and turn at night.
  • The medium-soft to medium-firm feel of this model should be comfortable and pressure-relieving to both back and side sleepers.
  • This bed is super-bouncy and responsive, so combination sleepers should be able to easily switch sleeping positions throughout the night without getting stuck.

Cons of the Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress

  • This mattress isn’t firm enough to provide hip support for most stomach sleepers, and could cause their spine to be thrown off alignment.
  • This bed doesn’t provide the deep sinkage or slow-moving foam that you get in memory foam mattresses.

Expert Opinion

Hybrid mattresses can be fantastic options for folks in need of a durable structure, as they’re built with both foam and coils. This means they get the best of both worlds — cozy pressure relief up top and firm support below. Thankfully, there are a lot of hybrid models available on the market today, with one of our faves being the WinkBed mattress.

What sets this model apart is its super sturdy construction. While the pillow top itself is pleasantly plush, the rest of the bed is anything but. After sinking through the top layers of soft foam, you’ll land on a springy section of microcoils, which is quickly followed up by a tall system of pocketed coils. This results in a ton of bouncy support that brings some much needed heft and lift to the structure. Over time, these coils will also help to support the top layers of foam as they begin to naturally sag and change shape. This mattress also comes in four different firmness levels, including an option for plus-sized sleepers, so it can appeal to a wide variety of people.

To really make sure this mattress won’t sag, we put the WinkBed through our edge support test. This allows us to determine the strength of a mattress’s perimeter, which is often an indicator of durability. Sturdy edges allow folks to really spread out or sleep towards the edge of the mattress. To test this, we sat and laid down on the edges of the WinkBed to see just how much it collapses under our weight. To our satisfaction, the WinkBed showed impressive edge support. Because it has reinforced edges, we only saw a slight collapse, which is nothing to be worried about.

What our tester says: “One of my favorite things about the WinkBed is its durability. This is a high-quality mattress that should really stand the test of time. This is great news for any sleeper, but especially nice for heavy people and couples.” – Bridget Chapman, senior product editor

What Customers Say

Many reviews take time to applaud the WinkBed’s ability to help relieve their back pain.

Pros of the WinkBed Mattress

  • This mattress is designed to keep sleepers cool all night long, which is a great feature for those who sleep hot at night.
  • The WinkBed is bouncy and responsive, so combination sleepers should be able to easily switch between sleeping positions without getting caught in the mattress.
  • This bed is a good pick for those who enjoy the feel of an innerspring mattress. It’s super supportive and could really benefit those with lower back pain.

Cons of the WinkBed Mattress

  • This mattress may be too firm for side sleepers, who usually need a softer mattress to relieve pressure from their hips and shoulders.
  • The WinkBed isn’t the best choice if you’re looking to save money. But, it is often on sale, and it’s super durable, which makes it a good mattress for the money.

Expert Opinion

The Brooklyn Bedding Titan is designed specifically for heavy people over 250 pounds, with extra-supportive touches such as responsive Titanflex foam in the comfort layer and an extra-tall layer of TitanCaliber-encased coils at the base. All of these materials work together to establish a 7.5/10 firmness that should appeal to heavier sleepers in all three sleeping positions. An added bonus of all this reinforcement is that the Titan is extra-durable, which means it should easily prevent sagging.

We had one of our friends, Paulie, come in and test the mattress. As a powerlifter, he fits the body type the Titan Plus was made for, and having someone like Paulie test the mattress was crucial for finessing our overall recommendation and opinion of this mattress. To Paulie, the mattress felt firm (a 7.5 out of 10 on our firmness scale) and supportive. But he could also feel contouring and pressure relief at his shoulders, as well as his lower back.

What our tester says: “The materials under the Titan Plus’ hood are sturdy and durable. You get just the right amount of cozy mobility on top, but the theme here is support. Heavier people with back problems will likely enjoy the lower body alignment the Titan Plus provides.” – Bridget Chapman, senior product editor

What Customers Say

With consideration of the mattress’s overall construction and material quality, reviewers comment on how the Titan Plus is a wonderful value buy.

Pros of the Titan Plus Mattress

  • This mattress has enough firm support to keep the hips and shoulders of stomach sleepers in one straight line, which is ideal to avoid pain.
  • The low motion transfer of this mattress makes it a good pick for couples, especially those who tend to get easily disturbed by the movement of their partner

Cons of the Titan Plus Mattress

  • Side sleepers aren’t likely to have enough sinkage on this bed in order to relieve pressure on their hips and shoulders. Light-weight side sleepers may find they have an even harder time sinking in.
  • This bed does have layers of foam, but you won’t feel like you’re sinking into them. This mattress has more of an “on top” of the bed feel, not an “in” the bed feel.

Expert Opinion

If you like the idea of a foam mattress but are worried about durability, you may want to check out Nectar’s gel memory foam mattress — it’s a durable, high-quality option that comes at a great price for budget-conscious shoppers. This pressure-relieving yet supportive bed has a thick gel memory foam layer, which carries all the comfort qualities of traditional memory foam, but provides better cooling. Additionally, the 4″ layer of dynamically adjusting foam adds bounce to the mattress, preventing sleepers from sinking too far into the bed. The materials of the Nectar — both comfortable and supportive — make it a great memory foam option for a mattress that doesn’t sag.

Strong edge support, or how well a mattress holds up on the sides, is also extremely important for preventing sagging. Luckily, the Nectar has solid results in this area, especially for an all-foam mattress, and this should keep side sleepers, back sleepers, and even couples satisfied.

What our tester says: “I found the original Nectar mattress — the company’s flagship and most popular and affordable mattress — to be pressure-relieving, yet supportive.” – Bridget Chapman, senior product editor

What Customers Say

Shoppers of all ages compliment the Nectar’s ability to lift pressure off of sensitive areas, from the shoulder to the back to the hip.

Pros of the Nectar Mattress

  • The Nectar is a quality mattress that is still affordable, which makes it a nice choice for budget-savvy shoppers.
  • This mattress has all of the sinkage, contouring, and pressure relief that a classic memory foam mattress provides. It’s especially nice for people with shoulder or hip pain.
  • The sinkage from this mattress should help back and side sleepers find pressure relief as the mattress conforms to their bodies.

Cons of the Nectar Mattress

  • Memory foam mattresses tend to be heat-trapping, so sleepers who run hot at night may find that this bed is not cooling enough. The gel foam helps cool the bed down a bit, but extra-hot sleepers may need a bed with more cooling properties.
  • Stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to keep their shoulder and hips in line. The Nectar may cause stomach sleepers’ hips to sink too far into the mattress.

We were skeptical of buying a mattress on line but it could not have gone any smoother. Anthony answered all of our questions during our many phone conversations. Delivery was prompt and went without a hitch. Best of all the mattress is so comfortable! I haven't had such a good night sleep in years. Highly recommend this.

Expert Opinion

In the market for a supportive innerspring mattress that won’t sag while you sleep? Consider the Saatva mattress. Made with a sturdy coil-on-coil construction, this bed is firm, bouncy, and built for the long haul. Durability points aside, our favorite thing about the Saatva is how well it supports a neutral spine alignment. What this means for is that it lifts the hips in line with the shoulders, creating an even line across the body. This alignment not only makes it super-easy to move around and change positions, but also helps to alleviate tension at the joints and lower back. The Saatva comes in three different firmnesses, so you can really hone in on the comfort level that’s right for you. All in all, this is a well-made bed designed to withstand a lot of wear and tear.

We tested the Saatva’s edge support in our mattress lab, and found some of the best edge support we’ve seen. This wasn’t entirely surprising, as the Saatva uses two different coil layers as well as reinforced edges for support. We didn’t notice any sinkage at all on the Saatva, regardless if we were lying on it or sitting on it.

What our tester says: “I think the Saatva is a great option for back sleepers, as the Luxury Firm model provides enough cushioning for their lumbar region, but also lots of support to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.” – Bridget Chapman, senior product editor

What Customers Say

Customers were more than satisfied with Saatva’s customer service throughout the mattress buying process.

Pros of the Saatva Mattress

  • This mattress provides tons of cushioning in the lumbar region while also adding spinal support, which is great for back sleepers.
  • The layers of coils in this innerspring mattress make it bouncy and responsive enough for combination sleepers to switch between different sleeping positions.
  • The Saatva is a sturdy and durable mattress, which makes it supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers.

Cons of the Saatva Mattress

  • Because this mattress has a traditional innerspring feel, it’s likely that you’ll be disturbed by any movement your partner makes throughout the night. If you sleep lightly, you may need a bed with better motion isolation.

Expert Opinion

Two people certainly wear out a mattress faster than one. And when it comes to mattresses for couples that won’t sag, the Emma Hybrid Comfort is at the top of our list, as all of its materials are made to be extra supportive. Couples should find that with springy coils, this bed is responsive and ideal for sex. These coils, along with open-celled foam and a cooling cover, help take away some of the body heat that comes with two sleepers. Lastly, the edge support is solid, which is important for durability and making full use of the mattress.

One of the most important factors for couples in a mattress’s ability to isolate motion. So, if your partner tosses and turns, the foams should trap the movement and prevent it from disturbing your sleep. To put this to the test, we dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches, and 12 inches. Then, we measured the disturbance. On the Emma Hybrid Comfort, we were delighted to see that the steel ball drop resulted in minimal disturbance. With this in mind, this should be a fantastic mattress for motion isolation, and therefore a wonderful choice for couples.

What our tester says: “The Emma mattress’s supportive foam layers and responsive coil system make it a fantastic choice for couples who prioritize motion isolation and mobility.” – Amelia Jerden, senior staff writer

What Customers Say

There aren’t many reviews of the Emma Hybrid Comfort just yet, as it’s a newer mattress, but the ones that are on the company site compliment everything from its cooling abilities to its convenient delivery process.

Pros of the Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress

  • This mattress is very supportive, so heavyweight sleepers can appreciate the contour that it provides while still being durable.
  • The Hybrid Comfort does a good job of achieving optimal spinal alignment, which is necessary for back sleepers.
  • The springy coils in this mattress make the bed super-responsive, which is great for combination sleepers who need to easily change sleeping positions throughout the night.

Cons of the Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress

  • The Hybrid Comfort doesn’t provide the same slow-moving foam feel that a traditional memory foam mattress has, so those looking for that feature may not like this mattress.

What to Consider When Buying a Mattress That Won’t Sag

Materials

First and foremost, you’ll want to think about the materials at play. This may seem an obvious starting point, but you’d be surprised how much easier your search will be once you understand how certain common mattress materials respond to pressure over time.

For instance, poly foam is not going to be nearly as durable as memory foam, which, in turn, isn’t likely to last as long as high-density poly foam or latex. And though both pocketed coils and steel springs bring a lot of heft to a structure, steel coils typically last longer than individually wrapped (or pocketed) coils.

Support

While better understanding the materials themselves is important, it’s also crucial to consider how the materials are combined within a mattress. When it comes to preventing sagging, the key here is to focus on the support layers.

When we think about support, we’re thinking about the foundational layers of the mattress. Typically made of either pocketed coils or high-density poly foam, these sections are meant to stabilize the structure and provide support to both the sleeper and the softer comfort layers above it. In the case of sagging, a strong foundation will ensure that any changes to said comfort layers won’t dramatically alter the feel of the mattress.

In our opinion, pocketed coils and steel springs make the most supportive foundations. So, if durability is a major consideration for you, we’d recommend sticking with either a traditional innerspring mattress or a hybrid mattress made of both foam and coils.

Flippability

If you’re really concerned about sagging, you may want to go with a flippable mattress. There are more and more flippable models available on the market all the time, and they can be great options for folks who want to extend the life of their mattress.

And the reason why is quite simple — if you notice any sagging or dips in your mattress, you can easily flip the bed over to get a fresh feel. Though it may feel a bit laborious, oscillating between the two sides can help prevent any one part of your bed from getting too worn down.

It’s important to note that not all mattresses are flippable. But, if you want to achieve a similar vibe, you can always rotate your mattress every few months to even out the sagging across the surface.

Warranty

You’ll also want to consider the warranty on your mattress. While most brands provide some sort of limited coverage, the extent to which your mattress can get replaced varies widely across the market. So, make sure to read the fine print to see what exactly is covered.

If your mattress happens to come with a robust warranty, this will extend its longevity well into the future. Though a great warranty may or may not be a selling point for you, it can help alleviate worries about “sagging” or general wear and tear.

FAQs

What types of mattresses are less likely to sag?

A mattress with at least one layer of springs in its construction (so, a hybrid or an innerspring) is going to be less likely to sag than an all-foam mattress. That being said, there are some firmer foam beds made with denser foams that should last a good long while.

How long should a mattress last without sagging?

A high-quality mattress with springs should be able to last 7 to 10 years without sagging, although some — especially ones built with reinforced materials — may last much longer. A high-quality foam mattress should last between 5 and 7 years.

How do I keep my mattress from sagging?

The best way to prevent your mattress from sagging is making sure you’re buying a high-quality bed. But there are also several tricks that can elongate the life of your mattress, such as rotating it, keeping it on a sturdy bed frame or other type of foundation, or adding a firm mattress topper.

How We Chose These Mattresses

We’ve reviewed more than 220 products in our mattress lab, running each one through tests such as pressure-mapping and measuring motion transfer with a seismometer. From there, we give every bed an overall score based on materials, comfort, support, cooling, and edge support. We also factor in brand performance with categories such as value and warranty.

For a durable mattress, the quality of materials and the level of support serve as two of the most important factors. All of the mattresses that we selected for this roundup scored at least a 4 out of 5 for materials, and 4 out of 5 for support.
