Is the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Family-owned Brooklyn Bedding got its start in 1995, but really hit its stride around 2008 when it began selling its first ever bed-in-a-box. Since then, the brand has grown into one of the most popular on the market, with a product line that includes six different mattresses as well as pillows, sheets, and foundations!
While we won’t be going into all these items, we will take a moment later on to compare the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid to some other Brooklyn Bedding models. But before we do that, let’s see who the Signature Hybrid could work best for.
Who I recommend the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid for
- Given the bed’s excellent bounce, I’d highly recommend it for combination sleepers who need to change positions in the night.
- I also think it could be a great fit for couples. You shouldn’t be overly disturbed by a restless partner on this bed, and it has nice firm edge support.
- Back sleepers who like an “on top of the bed” feel should also like this mattress.
Who I don’t recommend the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid for
- Those in search of gentler materials (like, say, memory foam), probably won’t find a lot to love in this mattress. I’d direct you to our best memory foam mattresses instead.
- Strict stomach sleepers may need a firmer mattress. I’d recommend choosing the Firm model of the Signature Hybrid or checking out the Brooklyn Bedding Plank mattress.
How Firm is the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Mattress?
Now that you have a general idea of who this mattress could work for, let’s talk about how it feels. Before we get started, I want to remind you that firmness and feel are very subjective. How a mattress will feel to you depends on your body type and preferred sleeping position. To give you a better idea of how this bed feels I polled a range of coworkers to get an average score.
As a reminder, Brooklyn Bedding offers this mattress in several firmness options. I’m reviewing the Medium Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress. If you’re looking for a softer or firmer feel, you may want to opt for the Soft or Firm model of this bed.
We gave the mattress a 6.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This means the mattress feels medium-firm. Personally, I thought the Signature Hybrid felt like a true medium-firm mattress.
This mattress has a bouncy, innerspring feel. I felt lifted up and out of the bed. I like this feel for combination sleepers. No matter which positions you cycle through, you should feel supported by the Signature Hybrid. And it should be easy to roll over and switch positions throughout the night.

Testing the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Different sleepers require different amounts of pressure relief and support. Read on below to see how the Brooklyn Signature performs for people of various body weights.
Is the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – I also think this feel could work quite well for light back sleepers. It offers a nice balance of pressure and support for these folks.
- Light Side Sleepers – These sleepers might need a bed that offers more relief around their pressure points. If you’re looking for a plush feel, I’d recommend opting for the Soft model of this bed or checking out one of our best soft mattresses instead.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers should feel comfortable on the Signature Hybrid. It will offer enough support to keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders.
Is the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers will feel comfortable and supported, plus be able to move around on this bed with ease.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – Side sleepers should do well on this mattress, especially those wanting a balanced feel. But if they’re looking for extra pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, I’d recommend they opt for the Soft model.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The firm lift of this mattress should keep your spine in a fairly healthy alignment here, but your hips may sink into it a little bit. I’d recommend opting for the Firm model of this mattress to be safe.
Is the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – These sleepers should get a good mix of support and pressure relief on this bed, which might feel softer to them than it does to other sleepers.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers could also like this mattress, and should get a bit more sinkage around the shoulders and hips than other sleepers.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – This mattress is not supportive enough for heavy stomach sleepers. I’d recommend they check out the Brooklyn Titan Luxe Hybrid mattress instead.
Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Another important component of a bed’s feel is its ability to relieve pain. To measure pain relief, I test for pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a mattress alleviates tension at sensitive spots like the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
To see how well the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid relieves pressure I stretched out on a pressure map. This nifty device tracks my movements as I roll around the mattress, recording the force my body exerts across different positions. It creates a map that shows low pressure areas in blue to green and high pressure areas in yellow to red.
Back Pain — Based on the blue on this pressure map, I think the Signature Hybrid could be a nice choice for back sleepers with back pain. It should promote a healthy sleep posture, which is key to avoiding pain.
Shoulder Pain — Due to the pressure map results, I don’t think this bed in the medium firmness level is a good fit for side sleepers with shoulder pain. Based on my experience on this bed, its medium-firm feel could cause some stiffness to build up in the shoulder area for side sleepers. I’d recommend they opt for the Soft model instead. I think back sleepers with shoulder pain should do well on the Soft or Medium model based on these results.
Hip Pain — Results show me this could be a great bed for back sleepers with back pain. The concentrated yellow spots around my hips when I’m on my side tell me this mattress would not be a good fit for side sleepers with hip pain. I’d recommend side sleepers choose the Soft model or one of our best mattresses for hip pain instead. I think stomach sleepers would do best with the Firm model to help prevent hip pain.
Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples need a mattress that’s good for sex, features good motion isolation, has good edge support, and sleeps cool. Read on below to see how the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid performs in those areas, and to learn more about why they’re important.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how much movement travels from one side of the mattress to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers to consider, but is even more important for anyone who shares a bed with a partner or pet.
To measure motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These are pretty great motion transfer results, which tells me you shouldn’t be too disturbed by movement on this bed. Though the mattress is certainly bouncy, the top layers of foam do a good job of dampening a lot of the disturbance on its surface. Verdict? You shouldn’t feel overly disturbed by a restless partner on this mattress.
Sex
The best mattresses for couples are normally responsive enough to make moving around during sex easy. The Signature Hybrid’s bouncy feel definitely makes it easy to more around, which makes me think this could be an excellent mattress for sex.
Cooling
Couples overheat more quickly than solo sleepers, so often prefer cooling beds. The Brooklyn Hybrid’s hybrid construction encourages a lot of airflow, so I think this bed is a nice cooling pick for hot sleepers. If you sleep extra hot, you can also add a cooling cover to the mattress for an additional fee.
Edge Support
Another important feature for couples is a mattress’s edge support. Edge support is a measure of whether or not you can sleep all the way on the side of your bed without it collapsing under your weight. The Signature Hybrid had high-quality edge support. I felt very stable on this side of this mattress. This tells me that couples and heavier people should be able to use their entire mattress surface without it sagging at the sides.
What is the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Mattress Made of?
The 11.5-inch Brooklyn Signature Hybrid is built with sturdy CertiPUR-US® Certified foams and pocketed coils. This combination of bouncy foam materials and coils creates a buoyant structure, one that could be especially well-suited for those in need of a little extra support.
Cover — Made of a poly/cotton blend, the cover is soft and breathable with a cozy feel. It’s also quilted with a bit of memory foam, so should provide the sleeper with some immediate pressure relief.
Comfort Layer — The comfort layer is made of the brand’s Hyper-Elastic Supreme Response Comfort Foam, which combines the body-contouring feel of memory foam with the responsiveness of latex foam. This hyper-elastic foam helios lift you up and out of the mattress. It also sleeps fairly cool.
Transition Layer — Up next, you’ll find a layer of VariFlex Transition Foam. This firmer section helps ease the sleeper onto the pocketed coil support system below and adds some additional compression support. I’ll note here that the Signature Hybrid’s Firm option includes high-density memory foam instead of VariFlex foam in this layer.
Support Layer — The bulk of this bed’s durability and shape comes from its Ascension coil system. These individually wrapped coils bring some fantastic bounce to the structure and encourage a ton of breathability, which could help with temperature regulation throughout the night.
Base Layer — Rounding out the mattress is a layer of high-density foam. This support foam is there to give the coils something to bounce off.
Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Like any bed-in-a-box mattress, the Brooklyn Signature has a 24-48 off-gassing and decompression period after it’s unboxed. The bed might release a slight chemical odor during this time, so I recommend keeping your new mattress in a ventilated room.

My Final Thoughts about the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Mattress
Well, we’ve officially arrived at the end of my review. While I can’t decide if the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress is right for you, I can offer a few final thoughts to help you decide for yourself.
My favorite things about the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress
I really like how the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid comes in three different firmness levels. It allows for all kinds of sleepers to find the right fit for them. I appreciate that the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress isolates motion well, has strong edge support, and sleeps fairly cool. Speaking to the Medium model, all these features, plus its medium-firm comfort level, mean this bed is a great choice for couples. In fact, it’s actually on our best mattresses for couples list this year.
I also like that this mattress offers an “on-top-of-the-bed,” plush feel. I think it’s a great choice for combination sleepers who need a mattress that makes it easy to change positions at night. I’d highly recommend considering the Signature Hybrid if you switch positions frequently throughout the night.
And finally, I think this mattress is very budget-friendly. If you use our Brooklyn Bedding coupon you can often score a new Signature Hybrid for under $1,000. In fact, this bed has actually made our yearly best mattress under $1,000 list several times.
My Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress complaints
All that said, I don’t think the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid mattress is perfect. If you’re someone looking for a more luxurious mattress with some bells and whistles, this bed is not for you. This is a no-frills hybrid mattress. If you’re looking for a basic, high-quality bed you should like the Signature Hybrid, but it doesn’t offer any advanced cooling or pressure-relief tech.
I’ll also note that a few customers complained that their mattress boxes were banged-up upon arrival. That’s a standard risk of purchasing any bed-in-a-box mattress, you never know how gently it will be treated while in-transit. But damage to the shipping box shouldn’t affect your new bed, so I wouldn’t be overly concerned about this.
