Is the Avocado Green a Good Mattress for You?
To start, we put each of our mattresses through something called a “Rest Test,” where we lie down on the bed for an uninterrupted 15-minute power nap. This gives us a big-picture assessment of how it performs before we get into some of our more specific tests. Here’s how my colleague Amelia felt napping on the Avocado Green Mattress:
“The Avocado Green mattress offers a cozy, balanced feel. I felt lifted up on the mattress as I was resting, but still got some pressure relief around my shoulders and hips. Laying on my back and side, I felt very comfortable. On my stomach, however, I did feel my hips sinking into the bed. But overall, I think this is a really comfortable mattress for folks who want a soft feel but don’t want to sink into the bed.”
Along with the Rest Test, I want to offer some quick recommendations for the Avocado before we fully dive into this review since different factors, such as your body type and sleeping position, will determine whether or not a mattress will work for you.
Who I Recommend the Avocado Green Mattress For
- This bed is supremely bouncy and has more of an “on top” feel to it, which tells me this could be a good pick for combination sleepers, particularly those who flip between back sleeping and side sleeping in the night.
- Heavier folks should definitely consider this mattress. The sturdy latex and coil structures in the Avocado Green offer impressive support and durability, meaning the mattress shouldn’t wear out too quickly. Avocado mattresses are designed to support a lot of weight — up to 350 pounds per person.
- The mix of support along with a cushiony pillow top make the Avocado Green a great choice for back sleepers. These sleepers should find that the latex included in this mattress helps to fill in the space around their lumbar region.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Avocado Green Mattress For
- Since organic materials tend to be on the more expensive side, I don’t recommend this bed to budget shoppers. Instead, I suggest customers on a tight budget take a look at one of our favorite cheaper options.
- I also do not recommend the Avocado Green for lightweight side sleepers looking for deep body contouring and pressure relief. Although I do think this mattress has a softer feel with the pillow top, it will not allow for a ton of sinkage for these sleepers.

How Firm is the Avocado Green Mattress?
As with any feel factor, firmness is a subjective measure that can change a lot depending on one’s body size, shape, and weight. Therefore, it would be a bit misleading to only report my firmness thoughts here, as my body is bound to be different than yours. To mitigate this bias, I invited a few of my coworkers into the studio to test this bad boy out with me.
The score you see below is the average of all our personal firmness ratings.
Our team landed on an average rating of about 6 out of 10. Considering the industry standard of 6.5 for a medium-firm mattress, it seems this bed is a touch softer than average. I found its pillow top and latex comfort layer helped to soften up the firmness of the pocketed coil system. However, if you opt for the standard option of the Avocado Green without the pillow top, it’ll be slightly firmer.

Avocado Green Mattress Performance
While I could keep describing my experience on the Avocado Green in words, I’d much rather show you what I’m talking about. To that end, I’m going to walk you through a couple of specialized tests. I measured how the Avocado Green mattress with the pillow top performed in different sleeping positions, how it relieved pain and pressure, and how it might feel for couples sharing a bed.
Testing the Avocado Green Mattress In Different Sleeping Positions
Different sleeping positions and weights require different amounts of support. Generally, light sleepers don’t require as much support as heavy sleepers. Read on below to see how this firm mattress performs for sleepers of different weights.
Is the Avocado Green a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers: This mattress will feel about medium-firm to these sleepers, which is right where back sleepers want their mattress to be. These sleepers get plenty of support from the durable latex and coils.
- Light Side Sleepers: Light sleepers are more sensitive to the firmness of their mattress. The Avocado Green will likely be too firm for these sleepers. They would benefit from a softer mattress with more sinkage and body contouring.
- Light Stomach Sleepers: I think both the standard and pillow top version of this mattress will provide enough support at the hips (from the latex included) that light stomach sleepers will be able to keep their spines neutrally aligned.
Is the Avocado Green a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 to 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers: I think average weight back sleepers will really enjoy this mattress. This bed allows these sleepers to lay on top of the bed rather than sink in it. This will keep their spines in alignment, which helps to reduce back pain.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers: In my opinion, the Avocado Green with the pillow top is very comfortable while side sleeping. However, it may provide too lifted of a feel for some strict side sleepers. Even with the pillow top version, some of these strict sleepers might want a softer mattress that offers more sinkage. I think sleepers who switch between side sleeping and another position should be comfortable, though.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers: I believe the pillow top version of the Avocado Green may be a little too plush to stop strict stomach sleepers’ hips from sinking too far into the mattress. However, the standard version of this mattress could offer enough support for these sleepers.
Is the Avocado Green a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers: This mattress is a great choice for sleepers who have a heavier body weight (250 pounds or more). The latex and coil design offers extra support for heavier folks. You can also check out our picks for the best mattress for heavy sleepers for more options.
- Heavy Side Sleepers: I think this mattress should feel soft and comfortable for these sleepers. They should get some nice sinkage around the shoulder and hip regions.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers: Heavy stomach sleepers could do well on the standard version of this bed, as the pocketed coils provide enough support for sleepers up to 350 pounds. However, I’d also recommend looking at our top picks for heavy sleepers to see more supportive options designed specifically for heavier folks.
Avocado Green Pain Relief Performance
When I think about pressure relief, I’m mostly concerned with how well (or poorly) the mattress in question is able to alleviate tension at sensitive spots like the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
To figure all that out, I like to use a handy-dandy pressure map. I roll this baby out, hop aboard, and let the gadget do the rest. As I move around, the device tracks how my body’s interacting with the bed in real time, and creates a colored “map” to demonstrate the pressure it experiences. Areas of low pressure are demarcated from blue to green, and areas of high pressure range from yellow to red.
Back Pain – Stretching out on my back, I felt some nice pressure relief as the top layer of latex foam filled in the space around my lumbar region. Additionally, I found it incredibly easy to move around and change positions, which could be great for restless sleepers. I think the zoned support system of this mattress makes it a great choice for those suffering from lower back pain or sciatica. While a little bit of pressure did begin to form around my hips, it didn’t cause any major concerns for me.
Shoulder Pain – Though I felt some initial comfort on my shoulder when laying on my side, the longer I stayed in this position, the more pressure I experienced — and the map reflected that. That’s not too surprising, as strict side sleepers tend to exert a lot of force on their shoulders. Side sleepers with shoulder pain may want to check out our roundup of the best mattresses for shoulder pain instead. However, back, stomach, and combination sleepers with shoulder pain should be just fine.
Hip Pain – Turning onto my stomach, I felt pretty good. I thought the pocketed coils lifted my hips in line with my shoulders, but I did notice some sinkage after time. This lack of support for stomach sleepers may actually inflict more pressure rather than relieving it. Stomach sleepers with hip pain should steer towards the standard version of the Avocado Green rather than the pillow top, as it will provide a firmer touch. Side sleepers with hip pain may want to opt for a softer mattress as well. However, I think this mattress works nicely for back sleepers with hip pain, who should feel supported on this mattress.
Avocado Green Performance for Couples
If you share your bed with a partner, you’ll want to keep a few more things in mind while shopping for a new mattress. Features you’ll want to consider include motion transfer, performance during sex, cooling, and edge support.
Motion Transfer
For my next test, I’m going to examine the Avocado Green’s motion transfer, or the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important section for all sleepers, but especially so for those who sleep with a partner.
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches, and 12 inches. I then measured the disturbance it caused: The bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
These are decent motion transfer results (and pretty good for a bed made of latex and coils). I actually expected it to do worse on this test than it did since both latex and coils are known for having high motion transfer. I think you’ll likely feel your bedmate’s larger movements, but the added pillow top on the Avocado Green helps keep those smaller movements isolated.
Sex
A good mattress for sex is both bouncy and responsive — two of the Avocado Green’s strongest traits because of the latex included in its construction. Because of this, I’d say the Avocado Green with the pillow top is a good mattress for sex.
Cooling
The Avocado Green’s organic wool cover, in combination with its naturally cooling latex comfort layer, help to make this mattress sleep really cool. I think this bed is a great choice for hot sleepers.
Edge Support
Thanks to its supportive layer of pocketed coils and a reinforced steel perimeter, the Avocado Green has good edge support. This means that you can stretch out from side to side, and corner to corner, on this mattress while still feeling the same support you do in the middle. This not only makes the bed feel that much bigger, but also makes the bed last longer without sagging. However, you may feel a little sinkage while sitting on the edge of this mattress.

What is the Avocado Green Mattress Made Of?
The Avocado Green Mattress features a straightforward, three-layer design of latex and pocketed coils with a pillow top. While there’s not a lot to the bed’s 13-inch profile (or 11-inch profile if you forgo the pillow top), the simplicity is meant to create a structure that’s bouncy, taut, and ultra-supportive.

Cover – Crafted with organic cotton and hand-tufted with Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) wool from their co-owned wool collective, the Avocado Green’s cover is soft, breathable, and designed to wick moisture away from the body.
Pillow Top Layer – What I’m calling the pillow top layer is made up of GOLS organic certified latex. This material has some fantastic bounce to it, so it works to keep the sleeper positioned more on top of the structure than in it. Buoyancy aside, latex is also known for its cooling properties, which will help to regulate the sleepers’ temperatures throughout the night. Overall, the pillow top also adds some plushness to the bed.
Comfort Layer – Below the pillow top, is another layer of Dunlop latex. This adds extra cushioning and buoyancy to the mattress.
Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress comes from a tall pocketed coil system. The individually wrapped coils here double down on the bounce of the mattress, bringing a pleasant lift to the structure. Though pocketed coil systems are nothing new, what’s unique about Avocado’s is that it’s broken down into “five strategic zones,” which, according to the brand, help to support the hips, shoulders, and lower back in different ways.
Avocado Green Mattress Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Like all bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Avocado will have a decompressing period after it is unboxed. I recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours to give the bed time to fully decompress. However, the natural and organic materials in the Avocado mattresses do not off-gas, so there will be little to no smell outside of the materials airing out from being packaged. One thing to keep in mind is that a queen sized Avocado Green mattress does weigh around 142 pounds when compressed, so you might want to recruit a friend to help you set it up.

Does the Avocado mattress need a box spring?
While a box spring can technically work with the Avocado mattress, it works best with firmer, non-yielding surfaces such as platform beds, mattress foundations or bed slats.
Can you flip an Avocado mattress?
The Avocado mattress does not need to be flipped. This is because the support layer is at the bottom, so flipping the bed would compromise the comfort of the bed. The manufacturer does recommend you rotate the mattress once per month, for the first six months, then once every three months.
