First up, let’s talk about who this Puffy mattress may be good for. While I can’t make the decision for you, I can provide you with who I do and don’t recommend this bed for, which should help you get an idea if the Puffy Royal Hybrid is the right fit for you.
Who I recommend the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress for
- If you love the feel of a memory foam mattress, this bed could be for you. It offers pressure-relieving sinkage and body-contouring.
- I also think this bed is an excellent choice for side sleepers. The soft foam layers offer superb pressure relief, helping prevent joint pain.
- Couples could really like this mattress. You won’t feel disturbed by a restless partner or pet on the Puffy Royal Hybrid.
Who I don’t recommend the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress for

- This Puffy has weak edge support, which means you can’t really use the full surface area of the model. So if you like to really spread out I might choose a different bed.

How Firm is the Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress?
One of the most important factors in choosing a new mattress is how it feels — especially how firm it may be! Measuring mattress firmness is actually kind of tricky, because everyone perceives firmness differently. What feels firm to me might feel soft to you! How firm you find a mattress will depend on how much you weigh and preferred sleeping positions. For context, I’m 5’10”, about 190 pounds, and prefer to sleep on my stomach.
I gave the Puffy Royal Hybrid a 5.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. For reference, 6.5 out of 10 is the industry standard for medium firmness. This means the Royal Hybrid is a soft mattress. I generally like this firmness level for side sleepers and some back sleepers.

Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress Performance
As I said, mattress firmness is subjective! Firmness is important, but it’s hardly the only characteristic to consider when shopping for a new mattress. So in my reviews, I always run a few tests on the mattress to see what it offers in terms of performance in different sleeping positions, how it relieves pain and pressure, and how it might feel for couples sharing the bed.
Testing the Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Different sleeping positions and weights require different amounts of support. Generally, light sleepers don’t require as much support as heavy sleepers. Read on below to see how the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress performs for sleepers of different weights.
Is the Puffy Royal Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers tend to feel mattresses a bit firmer than advertised, so I think this bed is a great fit for these sleepers. Due to their light weight, these sleepers won’t sink as much into the mattress, but will still get a hugging sensation.
- Light Side Sleepers – I think that light side sleepers will appreciate the plush feel of this mattress as it contours to their body, relieving pressure on their shoulders and hips.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – I recommend stomach sleepers steer towards a firmer mattress to avoid any sinking at the hips, leading to back pain.
Is the Puffy Royal Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – I think average weight back sleepers will really enjoy this mattress. Back sleepers will feel the bed contouring at their pressure points, relieving any pain. Back sleepers who prefer to remain “on top” of the mattress however, should opt for a firmer bed.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – These sleepers will feel as though this mattress was made just for them — and may want to stay in bed all day! Its soft foams will really cushion pressure points, so you’re unlikely to experience pressure-related pain at your shoulders, hips, or knees on this bed.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – Because the Puffy Royal Hybrid is so soft and plush, I would not recommend it for average weight stomach sleepers. The most comfortable mattress for strict stomach sleepers is generally a firm mattress. On super soft mattresses like this one your hips could sink further down into the mattress than your shoulders, bringing your spine out of alignment and potentially causing back pain later on.
Is the Puffy Royal Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – The soft nature of this mattress is not designed to suit heavy sleepers needs. Despite its innerspring build, this mattress is too plush to support these sleepers. I would steer heavy sleepers towards a mattress made specifically for them.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – See above.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – See above.
Puffy Royal Hybrid Pain Relief Performance
When you consider a mattress, you likely want to know if it relieves pressure on potentially sensitive areas like the lower back, shoulders, and hips. To assess a bed’s pain relief performance, I like to use a pressure map!
I roll this special mat out on the mattress and hop on top. The mat then creates a color-coded map that shows pressure, ranging from blue and green for areas of low pressure up to yellow and red for high pressure. Here’s what I found on the Puffy Royal Hybrid:
Back Pain — You can see that the map is blue across the board when I’m on my back. I felt myself sinking into the mattress, and my weight was evenly distributed and supported. If you are a back sleeper who prefers a soft feel, this bed could be a nice option. On the other hand, stomach sleepers with back pain are going to need a firmer mattress. On a soft mattress, like the Royal Hybrid, these sleepers hips sink potentially causing more back rather than alleviating it.
Shoulder Pain — The pressure map for lying on my side was almost entirely blue, and I was completely comfortable with no pain on my shoulder. The soft, plush feel of this mattress will allow for a ton of deep sinkage to take away any pain/pressure, while lying in any position.
Hip Pain — When lying on my stomach, I felt my hips sink down too far into this mattress for my liking. If you sleep on your stomach at all, I would definitely recommend a firmer model to promote a neutral spinal alignment. When lying on my side, the pressure map does move into a little bit of green around the hip area, showing an area of slightly higher pressure, but in my experience green is a completely acceptable pressure range for this test and shouldn’t pose a problem for the majority of sleepers. All and all, this mattress should be great for back or side sleepers with hip pain!
Puffy Royal Hybrid Performance for Couples
When sharing the bed with a partner, you’ll want to keep a few more things in mind while shopping for a new mattress. Features you’ll want to consider include motion transfer, performance during sex, cooling, and edge support.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is something to think hard about if you share your bed with a partner or a pet — how much will it disturb you if they move around during the night?
To measure motion transfer, I dropped a steel ball onto one side of the bed from three different heights (4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches). I had a seismometer placed on the other side of the bed, to measure how much motion was “transferred” across the mattress.
The results here really impressed me, as I saw low levels of motion transfer. That’s because those thick memory foam layers do an excellent job of absorbing movement! You won’t feel disturbed by a restless partner on this plush mattress.
Sex
A good mattress for sex has to have a mix of bounce and responsiveness. Although the base layer of this bed has some coils, the multiple foam layers resting above really dampen bounce and instead make it difficult to move around on. This mattress is not a good choice for sex.
Cooling
Memory foam is known for overheating, but the Puffy Royal Hybrid’s breathable polyester cover, Cooling Cloud Foam, Climate Comfort Foam, and cooling gel throughout the memory foam keep this bed sleeping quite cool. The pocketed coils add an extra bit of cooling as it is a layer with plenty of airflow! I would recommend this mattress to hot sleepers, or anyone looking for a temperature-regulated night’s sleep.
Edge Support
Last but not least, I evaluate edge support. Can you use the whole surface area of the bed — or does the bed start to collapse as you get closer to the edge, making you feel like you might slide off?
Unfortunately, the mattress didn’t shine here. I did feel like those tall foam layers started to collapse a bit the closer I got to the edge, which is something couples and heavier people should keep in mind. In my opinion, weak edge support is one of the major downsides of the Puffy Royal Hybrid.
What is the Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
Now, let’s dive into the mattress itself! The Puffy Royal Hybrid is a hybrid mattress that contains a mixture of memory foam layers and coils for a cradling, supportive feel. All the Puffy’s foams offer zoned support. This means they’re firmer at the hips but softer at the shoulders, to provide targeted pressure relief and support.
I also want to note that Puffy’s premium foams are CertiPUR-US® Certified, which means they’re free of harmful chemicals and heavy metals.
Cover — The thin, breathable mattress cover doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, but the polyester fabric won’t trap body heat, which is nice for hot sleepers. This cover is also stain resistant and machine washable, which are great perks.
Comfort Layer — Right below the cover is a layer of Cooling Cloud™ Foam. This cooling layer provides really deep sinkage, helping you relax into the mattress rather than on top of it. It’s infused with cooling beads, which prevent too much heat from getting trapped in this bed.
Contour Layer — Another layer of memory foam helps create a cushioning, contouring sensation. This memory foam layer is also soft with a slow response to pressure, which accentuates the “sinking” feeling established by the top layer of Cooling Cloud™ Foam. Plus, it’s also infused with cooling gel.
Pressure Relief Layer — Below the memory foam layer you’ll find a section of the brand’s Climate Comfort™ Foam, which is firmer than the memory foam and has a quicker response to pressure. The Climate Comfort™ Foam is an interesting piece of technology — it’s resistant to temperature and humidity, helping you stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Transition Layer — Next up is a transition layer made from Section Cloud Technology. This firmer support foam helps ease the sleeper down onto the coil support layer below. The polyfoam layer also adds a little responsiveness to the bed.
Base Layer — Below the foam layers are individually wrapped pocketed coils. These individually wrapped coils help reduce motion transfer across the bed and offer a little bounce.
Puffy Royal Hybrid Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Puffy Royal Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will arrive compressed and will have to be unboxed at home. As with all bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24-48 hours for this bed to fully decompress.
You may detect an odor when unwrapping a brand new mattress and the Puffy Royal Hybrid is no exception. If you do detect an odor, I suggest unzipping the mattress cover and leaving it in a well ventilated room for the smell to dissipate.

My favorite things about the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress
I really like the soft memory foam layers of this mattress. It’s a great fit for side and back sleepers or folks who suffer from joint pain. These layers also do a great job isolating motion, which could be a nice perk for anyone who is easily disturbed by a restless partner.
The cooling technology in this mattress is also great. Puffy offers a memory-foam feel without trapping too much body heat, so hot sleepers looking for a soft mattress should definitely take a look at the Puffy.
My Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress complaints
That said, I think the Royal Hybrid lacks the support heavier sleepers (over 250 pounds) need. It’s just a bit too soft for these folks despite its innerspring support. Similarly, stomach sleepers will also need a firmer mattress.
And as I mentioned above, the Royal Hybrid does not have great edge support. So if you like to spread out you might want to look at another mattress option. One of our best mattresses for couples might offer a firmer edge.
