Are you a plus-sized sleeper (over 250 pounds) looking for a mattress that’s going to give you the support you need? Are you tired of your mattress sagging after months or a few short years? Then it might be time to consider a bed that is specifically designed for heavier sleepers, like the Helix Plus.

The Helix Plus is Helix Sleep’s mattress made for larger sleepers. It uses extra-large, reinforced coils and layers of dense foam to provide a strong mix of comfort and support. But is it the best mattress for you?

I personally tested out this mattress, and I had a plus-sized individual test it as well. In this review, I’ll share our opinions on the Helix Plus’s firmness, talk about the materials used in its construction, share which sleepers we think it’s best for, and tell you a bit about Helix’s policies and some of their other mattresses.

Is the Helix Plus a Good Mattress for You?

Before we get into all the details about the Helix Plus mattress, I want to give you some basic recommendations to help you decide if it’s the right mattress for your personal needs and preferences. Depending on your body weight, preferred sleeping position, and whether or not you sleep with a partner or pet, the Helix Plus may or may not work for you.

The Helix Plus mattress.
The Helix Plus mattress.

Who I recommend the Helix Plus mattress for

  • I think the Helix Plus is a good choice for heavy back sleepers. Our plus-sized tester, Paulie, found that he was most comfortable on his back on this mattress. He also felt the greatest degree of pressure relief in this position.
  • However, I also like this mattress for light sleepers (under 130 pounds). As a lighter sleeper myself, I felt comfortable on the Helix Plus in a range of different positions. Because of this, if you’re in a mixed weight couple, the Helix Plus could be a great mattress for both of you.
  • Heavier sleepers who want to feel more “in” their bed than “on top” of it could be happy on the Helix Plus, as Paulie felt quite a bit of sinkage while resting on this mattress. However, as a lighter sleeper myself, I felt a bit more “on top” of the Helix Plus.

Who I don’t recommend the Helix Plus mattress for

  • I wouldn’t recommend the Helix Plus to heavy combination sleepers. Paulie found that it was difficult to switch positions, and at times, he felt “stuck” in this mattress. These sleepers may want to check out our roundup of the best mattresses for combination sleepers for some better options.
  • This mattress isn’t the best option for heavy side sleepers. Paulie felt some pressure at his hips while lying on his side. Over time, this could lead to soreness in that area. If you’re a heavy side sleeper, I’d recommend checking out our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy people, as this list has some great picks for those who primarily sleep on their sides.
  • I’d recommend that heavier stomach sleepers go with a firmer mattress than the Helix Plus. These sleepers need quite a bit of support to keep their hips from sinking too far into their mattress, something that can eventually lead to an unhealthy spinal alignment.

How Firm is the Helix Plus Mattress?

Now that you know who the Helix Plus is and is not best for, let’s discuss how it actually feels. One of the greatest contributors to feel is a mattress’s firmness level. However, firmness is subjective and often influenced by factors like body type, height, and weight. To determine the Helix Plus’s firmness level, Paulie and I both gave it firmness ratings.

Helix Plus Firmness
Paulie found the Helix Plus to be medium-firm.

After lying on the Helix Plus, I decided to give it a 6.5 on the firmness scale, while Paulie gave it a 6 on the same scale. The industry standard for a medium-firm mattress is 6.5 on this scale, so for a lighter sleeper, this mattress should feel truly medium-firm. However, heavier sleepers are likely to experience the Helix Plus as a bit softer than medium-firm.

The Helix Plus is made of a combination of innerspring coils and foams. The foam layers provide some nice pressure relief and sinkage, and they give this mattress a medium to medium-soft feel overall. However, you should still experience solid support from the Helix Plus’s base layer of steel, wrapped coils, which are specifically designed to support heavier bodies. The Helix Plus’s firmness score is best for heavy back sleepers, who should experience some nice pressure relief around their lumbar region. Heavy back sleepers should also get enough support to keep their spines in a straight alignment, helping to prevent back pain in the future. Additionally, Paulie found back sleeping to be the most comfortable on the Helix Plus.

I would like to note that lighter sleepers should find that the Helix Plus works well for a range of positions, as I personally found this mattress to be incredibly comfortable while testing it. This is good news for lighter sleepers who have heavier partners because even though this bed is designed for plus-sized individuals, it still works for lighter people.

Helix Plus Mattress Performance

Now that we’ve discussed firmness, let’s see how the Helix Plus performed in a few more categories. I’ll kick things off by discussing how this mattress might feel to sleepers of different body weights depending on their preferred sleeping position.

Testing the Helix Plus Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions

As we’ve discussed above, mattresses will feel different to sleepers depending on their body weight and sleeping position. Because of this, let’s take a look at how the Helix Plus performs for different sleeper types.

Is the Helix Plus a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?

  • Light Back Sleepers – As a lightweight sleeper myself, I found this bed to be quite comfortable while sleeping on my back. The Helix Plus has a nice, medium-firm feel that offers good support to the spine and body.
  • Light Side Sleepers – I found this bed to be pretty comfortable on my side. So, if you’re a lighter sleeper with a heavy partner, this is one of the best side sleeping options for you. Most other beds designed for heavier folks will feel much firmer when you’re on your side, and this can lead to soreness around the hips and shoulders over time for lighter folks.
  • Light Stomach Sleepers – I also liked how this bed felt while sleeping on my stomach. The Helix Plus did a good job keeping my hips lifted up in line with my shoulders, promoting a healthy spinal alignment.

Is the Helix Plus a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?

  • Average Weight Back Sleepers – Average weight back sleepers should get a nice mix of support and pressure relief on this bed, as the Helix Plus should also feel about medium-soft to them.
  • Average Weight Side Sleepers – I think average weight side sleepers might be able to sleep well on this bed, but they could feel more pressure building up around their hips and shoulders than lighter folks as they sink closer to the Helix Plus’s wrapped coil layer.
  • Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – This bed will most likely be a little too soft for these sleepers. However, if you only spend part of the night on your stomach, the Helix Plus should still work for you.

Is the Helix Plus a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (Over 250 pounds)?

  • Heavy Back Sleepers – As I mentioned above, Paulie thought the Helix Plus felt supportive and comfortable when he was on his back. If you enjoy a hug-like, “sinking” feel that offers some nice body-contouring, you should really like this mattress.
  • Heavy Side Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers might want more cushioning than this mattress provides. Paulie experienced some pressure at his hips while laying on his side on the Helix Plus — something side sleepers definitely want to avoid in order to prevent soreness.
  • Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I do think that stomach sleepers should opt for a firmer bed than the Helix Plus. Stomach sleepers, and specifically heavy stomach sleepers, need a firm mattress that will prevent their hips from sinking too far into the bed and throwing their spine out of alignment, leading to back pain. The Helix Plus is not quite firm enough to provide enough support for this.

Helix Plus Mattress Pain Relief Performance

I like to use a pressure relief test to measure a bed’s ability to relieve pain in different areas. Pressure relief refers to how well a mattress alleviates tension at sensitive pressure points like the hips, shoulders, and lower back. It’s important that your weight is evenly distributed on your mattress, as this prevents soreness from developing in certain areas.

To measure the Helix Plus’s pressure relief, I had Paulie lay on a pressure map on top of this mattress, which recorded the pressure his body exerted on the bed in different positions. The map turns blue to green for low pressure and yellow to red for high pressure.

helis plus pressure
Paulie’s pressure map results on the Helix Plus mattress.

Back Pain – The yellow band around the lower back, as well as the overall soft feel of this mattress, let’s me know that the Helix Plus is probably not an ideal fit for heavy sleepers who struggle with back pain.

Shoulder Pain – The green around the shoulders across every sleeping position tells me that this bed is a great fit for heavy sleepers with shoulder pain. They should get enough cushioning from the Helix Plus’s foam layers in this area to feel comfortable throughout the night.

Hip Pain – The red areas around Paulie’s hips when he lays on his side (plus the yellow around the lower back in other positions) tell me that the Helix Plus is not a good fit for heavy sleepers with hip pain. Most likely, these sleepers are going to sink too close to this bed’s pocketed coil layer, which could result in some pressure build up around the hips.

Helix Plus Mattress Performance for Couples

Couples often fair best on a mattress that features low motion transfer, enough responsiveness for sex, strong edge support, and additional cooling features. We know that the Helix Plus is a great fit for partners of different weights based on its firmness level, but how will it hold up during these other tests? Read on to find out.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer refers to how much movement is detectable from one side of the bed to the other. It’s an important factor for couples, as no one wants to be disturbed by a restless bedmate.

To measure motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from three different heights that are meant to mimic different movements in bed. I used a seismometer to measure the movement these drops caused on the other side of the bed

Helix Plus motion
The Helix Plus’s motion transfer results.

I think these are pretty average motion transfer results. If you aren’t easily disturbed by your partner’s movements, you should be quite happy with this level of motion isolation. However, if your partner is a particularly restless sleeper, you might want to opt for a mattress with less motion transfer.

Sex

The best mattresses for sex are often bouncy and responsive, as that makes moving around and changing positions easy. If you’re on the lighter side, this bed is fairly easy to move around on, equating to a good mattress for sex. However, if you’re on the heavier side, you might feel a bit “stuck” in the Helix Plus, meaning that it’s not the best fit for sex.

Cooling

Couples often prefer cooling mattresses, since two bodies overheat faster than one. The Helix Plus’s pocketed coil base layer helps increase the airflow in this bed. Plus, the cover of the Helix Plus is made out of a naturally cooling material called Tencel (more on this later). Both of these additions help this mattress sleep pretty cool, which is great news for both couples and hot sleepers.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to how well a mattress holds up on the sides as compared to the center. On a mattress with good edge support, you won’t feel like you’re going to roll off the side while lying there. Good edge support can also add to a mattress’s durability, as it prevents sagging.

I was not impressed with the Helix Plus’s edge support. When Paulie sat on the edge of this bed, it compressed to nearly half of its original height. This can pose a problem for larger sleepers, and especially larger couples, who will want to take advantage of their mattress’s total surface area.

What is the Helix Plus Mattress Made Of?

The Helix Plus is a hybrid mattress, meaning that it’s constructed using a combination of foams and coils. This mattress has three layers of foam, including Ultra Dense High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and DuraDense Foam. Plus, this bed uses XL Wrapped Coils that were specifically designed for heavier sleepers. In total, the Helix Plus has a height of 12 inches.

Cover – The Helix Plus’s mattress cover is made from Tencel. This is a soft and breathable material that was designed to promote airflow throughout this mattress. Plus, it gives the Helix Plus that soft-to-the-touch feel immediately upon laying down.

Comfort Layer – The top layer of the Helix Plus is constructed using Ultra Dense High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam. This material is designed to offset pressure around the hips and shoulders, as well as helping to provide that deep compression support that heavier sleepers need. However, because this foam is so dense, it should keep heavier sleepers from sinking too far into this comfort layer.

Transition Layer – Below the comfort layer, sleepers will find a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam. This material has a latex-like feel and contours to the body, while still providing strong spinal support.

Support Layer – This Helix mattress gets the majority of its support from its layer of XL Wrapped Coils. These strong coils are specifically designed to support heavier weights.

Base Layer – Lastly, the Helix Plus includes a layer of proprietary DuraDense Foam. This is a high-density foam that provides added support and durability to this bed.

Helix Plus Construction
This photo reflects the previous layers of the Helix Plus mattress. The new layers are outlined above.

Helix Plus Unboxing and Off-Gassing

The Helix Plus will arrive in a box, so you’ll need to unwrap it and set it up on your bed frame. The unboxing process is very simple, but I’d recommend having a friend help you with it, as this mattress is fairly heavy. After unboxing, your new bed will need 24-48 hours to off-gas and decompress. I do want to note that this bed does have a fairly strong off-gassing odor. However, as long as you leave your bed in a well-ventilated room, any smell should dissipate within a few days at the most.

My Final Thoughts about the Helix Plus Mattress

Before we finish up this review, I’d like to recap some of what we’ve learned about the Helix Plus in this review. Though I can’t promise you that the Helix Plus will work for your personal sleeping needs and preferences, I hope these final thoughts will help you decide.

My favorite things about the Helix Plus mattress

I really like the soft, hug-like feeling that sleepers should get on the Helix Plus. This is great for anyone who likes to feel a bit more enveloped by their bed. I also think the Helix Plus is a strong choice for heavy back sleepers, as these sleepers should receive a balanced combination of pressure relief and support on this medium-firm bed. Finally, I think this is a great bed for mixed-weight couples, as I (a lighter sleeper) found it to be quite comfortable in multiple positions.

My Helix Plus mattress complaints

I think that some heavy sleepers might find that this mattress isn’t firm enough for their needs. A few reviews of the Helix Plus mentioned that it was too soft, so if you’re worried about firmness, I’d recommend choosing a mattress that offers more support. Other reviews also mentioned that the Helix Plus had a strong odor for a while after they unboxed it, which is something I also noticed while unboxing this bed. Finally, I do think that this mattress has pretty poor edge support, and good edge support is something heavier sleepers typically need.

The Big Fig mattress.
  • Like the Helix Plus, the Big Fig is specifically made for heavier sleepers. The Big Fig is also a hybrid mattress, so it uses a combination of foams and coils.

Helix Plus vs Brooklyn Titan

brooklyn titan
The Brooklyn Bedding Titan mattress.
  • The Brooklyn Titan is also designed for heavier sleepers, as it is a hybrid mattress built with foams and coils.
  • The Titan feels firmer than the Helix Plus, so it is most likely a better mattress for stomach sleepers.
  • The Helix Plus has a bit more breathability than the Titan. The Titan does have an optional cooling top panel, but it comes at an extra cost.
  • Learn more in my full Brooklyn Titan mattress review.
