Is the Bear Elite Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
To get started, I want to offer a few quick recommendations of who this bed might and might not be good for.
Who I recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid for
- I’d recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid for most side sleepers. I think they’ll get the needed pressure relief and contouring at the shoulders and hips on this bed. But if they want even more cushioning, then I’d opt for the Soft model.
- Back sleepers should also be really happy on this mattress. The layers of foam will provide them comfort while the coil system will provide them support.
- If you tend to sleep hot, then I think you’ll enjoy all the cooling factors this bed offers. From the Phase Change Material cover to the copper-infused foam, hot sleepers should like how breathable and cool this mattress sleeps.
Who I don’t recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid for
- Stomach sleepers will want a firmer mattress to keep their hips elevated. I’d recommend trying the Firm model of the Bear Elite or checking out one of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
- At full retail, the Bear Elite could run a little expensive for budget shoppers. But keep in mind we have coupons throughout this review you can click on to save more money.
- If a mattress with only all natural, eco-friendly materials is important to you, I’d recommend checking out our favorite organic mattresses. Although the Bear Elite has CertiPUR-US Certified foams, is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, and is Fiberglass-Free — there are other beds out there that take it a step further if that’s on your radar.
How Firm is the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress?
The firmness level of a mattress can determine how well it will work for a lot of sleepers. Keep in mind that firmness is subjective though and can change a lot depending on your body size, weight, and shape.
For this reason, I always like to incorporate a few different perspectives into this section and get my coworkers’ thoughts along with mine. The score you see below is the average of all our personal firmness ratings.
We ultimately gave the Bear Elite Hybrid a rating of 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for firmness is 6.5, so this bed in the Medium model is a touch softer than average.
The Bear Elite has a nice cushiony feel but is also easy to move around on, so it’s a nice fit for back and side combination sleepers.

While firmness is certainly important, there are a few more components to consider when shopping for a new bed. A few performance categories we’ll go through below include different sleeping positions and pain relief, along with how it performs for couples.
Testing the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress in Different Sleeping Positions
Different sleeping positions and body types require different amounts of support. Generally, a mattress is going to feel more firm to light sleepers than it will to heavy sleepers. Read on below to see how the Bear Elite performs for sleepers of different weights.
Is the Bear Elite Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers should have a great balance of pressure relief and support on this mattress. It should feel like a true medium-firm bed to them.
- Light Side Sleepers – Light side sleepers could potentially find this mattress too firm if they have sensitive joints. For this reason, I’d recommend selecting the Soft model instead.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – This model is not going to be firm enough for light stomach sleepers. These sleepers need a firm mattress to avoid sinkage at the hips, which creates a bend in the spine and could lead to back pain. I’d recommend trying the Firm model instead.
Is the Bear Elite Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers should enjoy the Bear Elite if they enjoy a medium-soft feel. The Elite’s foam layers and zoned sections should support their lumbar region to relieve tension at the lower back.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – I think this mattress should work really well for a lot of average weight side sleepers. They should feel the foam conforming to their pressure points nicely.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The Bear Elite in the Medium version is going to be too soft for these sleepers. I’d steer these sleepers to the Firm version of the mattress or to one of our best firm mattresses instead.
Is the Bear Elite Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – I think these sleepers should be really comfortable on this mattress model or the Firm model. They should feel supported by the pocketed coils.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – Heavy side sleepers should sink into the layers the right amount to get some comfort around their hips and shoulders.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I think this mattress model will be too soft for these sleepers. I’d recommend trying out the Firm model or checking out one of our favorite mattresses for heavier sleepers instead.
Bear Elite Hybrid Pain Relief Performance
How well a mattress relieves pain is also an important factor to consider. To measure how well the Bear Elite relieves pain, I tested out its pressure relief. Pressure relief refers to how evenly a bed distributes your weight. Evenly distributed weight relieves pressure (and pain) at sensitive areas, like the hips, shoulders, and lower back.
The Bear Elite has zoned support sections within to help promote this, but to take it a step further, I used a pressure map. I put the pressure map on top of the bed and laid on top. The map recorded how much pressure built up while I laid on the mattress. Here’s the gist when you’re looking at the results below: Areas of blue to green indicate low pressure while areas of orange to red indicate high pressure.
Back Pain – Based on these results, I’d say the Bear Elite is a good choice for back sleepers with back pain. However, I’d also recommend trying out the Firm model to provide extra support for the lumbar region. Side sleepers with back pain are likely going to want to try the Soft model and stomach sleepers with back pain would do better on the Firm model.
Shoulder Pain – Based on these results, the Bear Elite is a pretty good choice for back sleepers with shoulder pain. The top foam layers contour to the shoulders and offer great pressure relief. Again, side sleepers with shoulder pain will want to try the Soft model and stomach sleepers with shoulder pain should try the Firm model.
Hip Pain – I think this mattress will be a nice fit for back sleepers with hip pain. It performed really well on my pressure relief test. Side sleepers with hip pain should also feel comfortable on this bed, but they may want to give the Soft model a try over the Medium for extra cushioning. Stomach sleepers with hip pain should opt for the Firm model.

If you sleep with a partner, you’ll want to keep a few more things in mind when shopping for a new mattress. Features you’ll want to consider include motion transfer, performance during sex, cooling, and edge support. Read on below to see how the Bear Elite performs in all these areas.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer refers to the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. It can be an important test for every sleeper, but especially so for couples, as it’ll show how disturbed you’re likely to be by your bedmate’s tossing and turning in the night.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from heights of four inches, eight inches, and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The Bear Elite did a pretty good job isolating motion. I think you’d likely feel a partner getting in and out of the bed, but I don’t think the average sleeper would notice their partner moving around a little at night.
Sex
The best mattresses for sex will be responsive enough to move around and change positions on. The Bear Elite is responsive and easy to move around on, thanks to its individually encased pocketed spring coils. I’d say it’s a good bed for sex.
Cooling
When sleeping with a partner, you’ll want to consider cooling, as two people overheat more quickly than one. The Bear Elite does a great job at sleeping cool. Its cooling cover and copper-infused foam help dissipate body heat. The company says the Elite Hybrid has its most advanced cooling technology.
Edge Support
Edge support shows how well the perimeter of a mattress supports weight, which helps prevent any sinking or sagging when in bed, or when sitting on the edge to put your shoes on. Thanks to the edge-to-edge coils along the perimeter of this bed, I’d say the Bear Elite has good edge support.
What is the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress Made Of?
The Bear Elite is 14” in height and is made up of five layers that all work together to bring you pressure relief and support. Let’s dig into them more below.
Cover – The Bear Elite’s top layer is a hand quilted cover that combines Phase Change Material fabric and Celliant fiber. Phase Change Material is known for its ability to absorb body heat. Together, the company says these materials keep sleepers cool and also help with muscle recovery.
Comfort Layer – Below the cover is a layer of copper-infused memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, providing the sleeper with some immediate comfort and body-contouring. You’re likely to sink into this layer, which could be great for those in need of cushiony support at the shoulders. The copper infusion also helps prevent this layer from trapping body heat.
Contour Layer – Next up is a layer of comfort foam that brings extra airflow. It has five zoned sections in the bed to provide different amounts of pressure from your head to your toes.
Support Layer – Up next, you’ll find the support layer of individually encased pocketed spring coils. These help with motion isolation and make the mattress supportive. There are also edge-to-edge coils around the perimeter of the mattress, so you can sleep near the edge of the bed and maximize the sleep surface area. This also helps enhance the durability of the mattress.
Base Layer – The final layer of the Bear Elite is a high-density support foam to keep everything in place and supported.
Bear Elite Hybrid Unboxing and Off-Gassing
The Bear Elite Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will arrive compressed in a box. You’ll need to unbox it at home, and you’ll likely want someone else to help (a queen size weighs 110 pounds!).
Like most bed-in-a-box mattresses, you’ll need to wait at least 24 to 48 hours for this bed to fully decompress. As with many new mattresses, the Bear Elite will need to off-gas for a few hours, but any smell should diminish fairly quickly.

My Final Thoughts about the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

My favorite things about the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress
I honestly like a lot about the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress — starting with how you can choose your firmness level. I tested out the middle level (Medium) and I think it’s great that each sleeper can pick what option works best for them. That being said, I thought the Medium worked great for both back and side sleeping. It’s also responsive enough to move around on easily and super cooling for my fellow hot sleepers out there.
My Bear Elite Hybrid mattress complaints
Solely speaking about the Medium model, I think it’s too soft for stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers need a firm bed to keep their hips elevated and in alignment with their spine. I would suggest they try out the Firm version or opt for one of our favorite beds for stomach sleeping. Shoppers with a certain price range in mind could also potentially find the Bear Elite to be above their ideal price point, but keep in mind that we have coupons to help you out.

The Bear Elite ships free in an estimated seven to 10 business days. It comes with a 120-night trial period and a lifetime warranty. Returns are free of charge. A company associate said, “Our beds are made with very high-quality durable foams and coils and do not come with any weight limitations. When paired with our frame and foundation, the setup can hold up to 2,500 pounds.” Bear does not recommend using a traditional coil box spring since they say it won’t provide the evenly distributed surface area needed for proper support. Instead, the company recommends using a foundation, platform bed, bunky board, or adjustable base.
